Surfboard Care 101

surf

We all know the joy of riding the perfect wave on our trusty surfboards. They're not just tools; they're our companion. To preserve this cherished relationship and ensure your board remains a steadfast partner on countless wave-riding escapades, we've compiled some invaluable tips to help you prolong its lifespan and keep the stoke alive. Let's dive in and explore some essential tips.

Cleaning board

1. Rinse and Repeat:

After every surf session, give your board a good rinse with fresh water. Saltwater can corrode the materials over time, so make sure you remove all traces of it. Use a hose or a shower, and pay extra attention to the leash, fins, and any crevices where saltwater might be hiding.

2. Wax On, Wax Off:

Regularly waxing your board not only enhances your grip but also protects the deck from sun damage. During hot days, try using a base coat to prevent the wax from melting too quickly. Try regularly removing old wax before applying a new layer for a better grip.

Storage

3. Store with Care:

When not in use, store your surfboard in a cool, shaded area. Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight for prolonged periods, as UV rays can damage the materials and fade the colors. If possible, store your board vertically, using proper racks or padded hooks, to prevent warping.

4. Minor Repairs, Major Impact:

Regularly inspect your board for any dings, cracks, or damages. Repair them promptly to prevent water from seeping into the core, which could lead to delamination. Small repairs can be easily fixed with a ding repair kit, while major damages should be taken to a professional surfboard repair shop.

When transporting your surfboard, invest in a high-quality board bag. It provides cushioning and protects your board from dings and scratches during transit. Secure your board properly on roof racks or inside your vehicle to prevent it from shifting or falling during transportation.

6. Know Your Limits:

Every surfboard has its limitations. Avoid using a high-performance board in challenging conditions that could lead to excessive pressure and potential damage. Instead, opt for a board suited for the wave size and your skill level.

Love and respect

7. Love and Respect:

Lastly, treat your surfboard with love and respect. Avoid tossing it around or using it as a surface for heavy objects, and never stand on it while on land, as excessive pressure can weaken its structure. Additionally, be mindful of the fins; they are crucial for stability and maneuverability. Avoid dragging your board across rough surfaces and handle it gently, like the prized possession it is.The better you care for your board, the longer it will serve you faithfully in the waves.
